As Chairperson, you will provide leadership to their Board of Trustees, ensuring effective governance and helping set the strategic direction of the charity.

You will work closely with management, fellow Trustees, and contractors to ensure the charity achieves its mission and purposes, in accordance with our Trust Deed.

Stitch Kitchen is a living story of gathering friends together around the table, sharing ingredients, ideas, skills, and time, to nurture ourselves and our community. Our mission is to inspire and build community through creative practices to reduce textile waste and its impact on our environment.

Stitch Kitchen trustees gather experience in collaborative governance, working alongside Dunedin’s grass-roots community sector, and supporting our transition to a zero waste society. 

General Chairperson Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Board of Trustees in governance and strategic decision-making.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive environment for Board members and wider team.
  • Represent The Just Atelier Trust trading as Stitch Kitchen to external stakeholders, including donors, partners, and the public.
  • Support fundraising initiatives and build relationships with key supporters.
  • Ensure the charity is complying with all legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage and lead bi-monthly board meetings and annual AGMs.

Requirements

Relevant Skills and Experience:

  • Governance role in community organisation
  • Small business management/strategic planning
  • Public relations
  • Fundraising
  • Networking, particularly in and around Ōtepoti | Dunedin
  • Human resources management experience
  • Legal experience, particularly in relation to small business and/or charities
  • Cultural competency and familiarity with Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Confidence using email systems, web-based tools, Google Drive

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

4-6 hours per month.
