Alexandra Rural Community Patrol is one of 170 community patrols affiliated to the national organisation Community Patrols of New Zealand (CPNZ). Their vision is for ‘A New Zealand where everyone feels safe’. In partnership with others, they prevent crime and reduce harm through the active presence of trained patrollers.
CPNZ volunteer Patrollers are the extra ‘eyes and ears’ of NZ Police. Working together patrollers assist police and other agencies in building safer local communities. CPNZ works closely with NZ Police through a Memorandum of Understanding which enable patrols to receive regular Police guidance, training and taskings.
The Alexandra Rural Community Patrol provide regular day time and evening patrols of Alexandra/Clyde and surrounding rural towns.
As a Community Patroller you will:
- work alongside another patroller in the Community Patrol car.
- able to self roster on evenings or afternoons that suit you.
- patrol residential, business and industrial areas, schools, parks, and reserves around Alexandra and Clyde
- be the ‘Eyes and Ears for the Police’, observing and reporting concerns/incidents to Police Comms
- occasionally provide support to police near an accident to detour traffic etc.
- complete records of areas patrolled and observations made during your shift.
- have the option to travel to rural villages from Ranfurly to Millers Flat.
- have the option of providing day time foot patrols around playgrounds and other key areas.
Training and Support provided:
- National CPNZ training including a simple online assessment (approximately 2 hours).
- Practical training provided by local experienced patrollers, including going out at least three times to observe.
- You'll learn to do radio reports to Police Comms.
- Free First Aid training is provided.
- On-going support and mentoring by experienced patrollers.
- CPNZ polo shirt, woolen hat and summer hat are provided.
- Summer and winter high-vis vest/jackets are provided for Patrols for safety and ID.

Requirements
- The desire to help build a safer community.
- Keen observation skills and the ability to take notes.
- A team-player with effective interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
- Clean drivers’ license and good health and must be a competent driver - should you choose to be a driver.
- Two referees required.
A Police background check is required for this role.
Time commitment
- 2 hours initial online training.
- Ideally complete 1-2 patrols each month.
- Choose which 3-4 hour patrol you would like to do on a monthly roster.
- Usually Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Afternoon / foot patrols to suit volunteer availability.
- Choose your patrol time - usually Afternoon : 2.00pm to 5.00pm. Evening: 7.30pm -11.30pm.
- Attend monthly meeting for updates and training. 2nd Monday of the month 4pm (usually 1.5 hours).
