Grans in Early Childhood

Central Otago REAP provides educational support and assistance across all sectors including early childhood, primary, secondary and adult education.

The Grans in Early Childhood programme connects older people in the community with the young generation resulting in fantastic social and learning outcomes for both parties. You don't have to be a grandparent yourself - the programme welcomes all older adults who enjoy spending time with young people and have time during the school day. It just takes an hour of your time each week for one term.

Grandparents spend time in the Early Childhood Centre, to help develop the children's confidence, communication skills and relationship building skills, especially around older people. You would be guided by the teachers, being included in an activity or going on excursions. You will be encouraged to interact with all the children, enabling them to build a friendly relationship with you.

Grandparents gain a sense of satisfaction and reward in seeing the benefits and progress in the young people. Many grandparents not only form a relationship with the children but also get to know other grandparents, as well as parents and staff.

The preschool and REAP provide ongoing support as well as materials and resources.
