At Whanake House Charitable Trust, their vision is to foster social interaction and vocational development for young adults with high functioning disabilities such as Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, ADHD, Down Syndrome, Dyslexia etc. They take a holistic approach, providing a variety of services which target all aspects of wellbeing. Their aim to bridge the gap for these young adults who often become socially isolated after leaving school and get lost within the system.

Their Monday coffee morning runs from 10.30am to 11.30am and provides an opportunity for these young adults to get together at a venue of their choice to socialise and build friendships while enjoying a hot drink and morning tea in a very relaxed environment. There may be up to 15 attending.

As a Group Buddy, your role will be to:

  • Ensure there is a warm, relaxed and welcoming environment
  • Provide support with ordering if required
  • Ensure everyone is included in conversations and feels comfortable in the group setting
  • Arrange the venue for the following week (decided by the group)
  • Check that everyone has transport arranged to get home afterwards

Benefits:

  • You will meet, and become part of, an awesome group!
  • You will be enabling these young adults to build the confidence to eventually arrange and attend coffee morning without the need for a group buddy
  • Everyone has something to look forward to on the following Monday!

A staff member will attend the coffee morning until everyone is comfortable and will then step down so that you can work independently with the group. You will be given staff contact details and can call us anytime if you need extra support.
