The Valley Project (VP) is a community-led development project that builds community connections and promotes the wellbeing of local families and whānau across North East Valley, Dunedin. ​​Their vision is of an inclusive, connected and thriving community.

The VP Volunteer Onboarding Project Specialist is a voluntary role that supports the Community Development Coordinator and other staff to develop resources and tools that will streamline and enhance the onboarding experience for new Valley Project volunteers involved in their community mahi.

The VP Volunteer Onboarding Project Specialist Volunteer will work independently and collaboratively alongside staff to develop resources, documents and tools which will support existing recruitment and onboarding processes and help them to strengthen volunteering best practice.

The role involves:

  • Working alongside the Community Development Coordinator and other staff to develop documents, resources and tools which strengthen and improve the onboarding experience for new Valley Project volunteers in line with best practice.
  • Leading the creation of a Volunteer Welcome Booklet and Handout for both regular and short-term volunteers.
  • Leading the development of a procedure that aligns with existing policy to deal with volunteer complaints and performance issues.
  • Working with the staff to update the website information about volunteering at the Valley Project.
  • Identifying gaps in the onboarding process and create resources or procedures to support new initiatives that will improve the experience of new volunteers - from recruitment and application through to placement and induction.
  • Establishing a sustainable procedure and related tools to help the team implement regular check-in procedures for new volunteers, thereby enhancing the overall volunteer experience.
  • Demonstrating the values and ethos of the Valley Project, ensuring that all volunteers and members of the community are treated with respect and dignity.
  • Following privacy, confidentiality and health and safety protocols.

Requirements

  • 18 years of age or over.
  • Have a good standard of conversational and written English, must be reliable and punctual.
  • Able to work in a team environment. Must be a team player.
  • Well developed administration skills with a high level of digital literacy.
  • Can demonsrate experience in the volunteer recruitment or management space.
  • Experience creating tools or resources and leading discrete projects from beginning to end.
  • Passionate about volunteering and knowledge of volunteering best practice - particularly as that relates to recruitment and onboarding.
  • Demonstrates understanding and application of good health and safety practices.
  • Resourceful and well organised. Able to work unsupervised and take initiative as needed.
  • Friendly, patient and respectful with communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Desirable

  • Experience working with Google docs, tools, forms and spreadsheets, Canva.
  • Lived experience of diversity, or experience working with diverse communities and groups.
  • Experience working in other social or community services would be a bonus.

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • 3-4 hours per week - time and day to be negotiated
  • Could be more, depending on volunteer's availability
