Community Driver

Blind Low Vision NZ (BLVNZ - formerly The Blind Foundation) is New Zealand’s main provider of practical and emotional support for over 14,000 Kiwis who are blind or have low vision, enabling them to face their future with confidence. BLVNZ equip people with the skills needed to participate fully in society. This includes support in living independently, using technology, continuing to read and communicate, being socially active and staying in, or looking for, work.

As a Driver for BLVNZ you will be:

  • Ideally making a regular (weekly/fortnightly/monthly) commitment of 3-4 hours to one of their activity groups to act as transport driver for that group.
  • Meeting and greeting members when you pick them up, keeping in mind, there may be a guide dog present.
  • Assisting clients to enter and exit the vehicle.
  • Dropping members off at the activity group and collecting them after the group ends, to drive them home. You are also welcome to stay for the activity if you choose.
  • Using your own registered, warranted & insured vehicle to take members to and from activities.

Training provided:

  • If you formally register as a volunteer with Blind Low Vision, there is an online induction that covers modules on communication and etiquette around blind and low vision people as well as Human Guiding training - both online as well as a practical session.
  • Mileage reimbursement is available.

Requirements

BLVNZ require volunteers who:

  • Have computer literacy skills to apply online, participate in a Microsoft Teams interview and to log in and complete an online induction. Lots of help is given if needed though.
  • Are reliable communicators, including via email.
  • Have a Full current Drivers License and clean driving record.
  • Have access to their own legal/roadworthy vehicle (WoF, Registration, Insurance).
  • Have good spoken communication skills.
  • Have a neat and tidy dress appearance.

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • The time commitment is usually associated with one of our regular activities, such as a Walking Group, Book Club or Craft Group and the volunteer provides transport in relation to the associated group. For example, a driver might have the role of providing transport on a Tuesday morning each fortnight for the Walking Group.

  • Due to the interview, background checks, paperwork, online induction and training process, it is preferred that the volunteer is prepared to offer at least a year of their volunteering time for this role.
