The Quarantine Island/Kamau Taurua Community Inc focus on the ecological restoration of Quarantine Island. The Island is listed as a Historic Area with Heritage NZ. The Community helps to care for the Island, protecting and enhancing its ecology, biodiversity and heritage. Quarantine Island was once a completely bush-clad forest that was cut down to make way for quarantine buildings and farming.
The Quarantine Island/Kamau Taurua Community are currently looking for a Building Maintenance/Handy helper with a passion for the community to:
In this role you will be:
- Using your labouring, DIY skills and experience to maintain the island's accommodation buildings
(Namely: St. Martin Lodge, and Keeper’s Cottage)
- Maintaining and improving these historic buildings
- Making the buildings more energy-efficient and comfortable whilst retaining their character
- Working alongside other volunteers
- Organising and following a maintenance schedule
- Using all appropriate tools (hammers, drills, saws, paint brushes etc) and materials provided
- Renovating, painting and decorating
- Preventative maintenance and alterations
- Using approved scaffolding and ladders
- Observing all health and safety best practice requirements
- Linking in with other organisations in the community
Training/Skills Gained:
- Initial orientation and ongoing support will be provided - relating to activities on the island
- You will be working, and learning, alongside the Keeper (Resident Manager) and the Island's other volunteers

Requirements
- Enthusiasm
- Physically fit
- Willingness to assist others with trades experience and perform various labouring tasks
- DIY or specific trade skills useful but not necessarily essential
- Previous building, carpentry, decorating, renovating, plumbing or roofing skills and experience would be an advantage
- Tools and equipment, access to a workshop is provided

Trades & Maintenance
Volunteer South's office is closed from Friday 20th December until Monday January 6th. Many organisations listing roles online will also be taking a break.
