Secretary: Oamaru Victorian Heritage Celebrations Committee

The Oamaru Victorian Heritage Committee showcases Oamaru's diverse heritage, social history and unique Victorian architecture through the iconic annual Victorian Heritage Celebrations. The events are largely held in the Victorian streetscapes of the Heritage Precinct and re-imagine 19th century New Zealand. The Committee organises 6 core events for the Celebrations, including the Garden Party, traditional Morning Tea, Street Parade, Fashion Show and Old-Time Dance. Numerous other events are run by community groups, resulting in a large multi-day festival. OVHC coordinates the full programme, then promotes and advertises the Celebrations as a whole.

As the Committee Secretary you will:

  • Be joining a friendly and experienced Committee
  • Recording and circulating Committee meeting minutes
  • Meeting other enthusiastic and talented volunteers
  • Planning and delivering the annual Celebrations every November
  • Engaging in email and document management (Using their Google drive account)
  • Responding to questions from community groups and the general public

Training and Skills include:

  • Initial orientation to the organisation
  • You will receive ongoing support from the committee

Volunteers will gain:

  • The opportunity to help to keep an important part of Aotearoa New Zealand's diverse heritage alive
  • New (or further) experience providing support to a governance committee
  • Insight into Heritage Event planning and operations
  • The ability to contribute, and work alongside, a fun and experienced team

Requirements

  • The Secretary will have admin experience (Good knowledge of word processing and email)
  • Friendly and approachable
  • A home computer to process and send messages
  • The Secretary should have an interest in Oamaru/Waitaki heritage and Heritage Celebrations
  • The Secretary should be happy to take part in regular meetings
  • Ability to record, prepare and submit minutes
  • Good attention to detail
  • Contribute to wider discussions and enjoy being part of a diverse team

Time commitment

  • The Secretary is expected to attend meetings every 2-4 weeks (as needed) for 60-90 minutes
  • Additional work in between meetings is expected to take approximately 2-4 hours a month on average
