Aroha Kaikorai Valley is a conservation trust dedicated to improving the local environment and strengthening community connections. This involves removing predators and weeds, planting native trees, and improving the water quality of the Kaikorai Stream. They are currently looking for fit volunteers who would like to help check and maintain predator traps so native wildlife can flourish.

As an Advanced Trap Checker you will:

  • Drive to the Aroha Kaikorai Valley shed to collect bait and equipment
  • Drive around Kaikorai Valley to access various trap lines
  • Use the Trap.nz app to locate traps and log data
  • Navigate steep and uneven terrain to access traps
  • Remove catches and rebait traps
  • Safely handle and dispose of animal carcasses
  • Communicate with other Advanced Trap Checkers via a group chat

Training and Skills Gained:

  • A 2-hour training induction is provided
  • A supervisor will accompany you to trap sites to show you what to do
  • Although you’ll be working independently, full training and ongoing support will be provided
  • Develop your trapping skills while supporting native wildlife
  • This role will keep you fit and agile year-round and you’ll be ready for tramping and climbing

Requirements

  • Follow health and safety guidelines
  • Your own roadworthy motor vehicle (WoF, registration and insurance)
  • A full driver licence - you'll need a vehicle to get to trap locations
  • Sturdy boots with good ankle support
  • Have a high level of fitness (able to manage steep and uneven terrain)
  • Have a desire to help the environment and community

Time commitment

  • This is a flexible, casual role
  • Trap lines should be checked at least once a fortnight
  • Checks can be completed around your availability and suitable weather conditions
    *Estimated time commitment is around 1 hour per week
  • A minimum 6 month commitment is preferred
