Aroha Kaikorai Valley is a conservation trust dedicated to improving the local environment and strengthening community connections. Their work focuses on removing predators and weeds, planting native trees, and improving the water quality of the Kaikorai Stream.

They are looking for a Community Trapper to join their predator control efforts and help manage backyard traps for community members who are unable to do this themselves.

As a Community Trapper, you will:

  • Visit private backyards to check predator traps
  • Regularly rebait and reset possum and rat traps
  • Safely dispose of animal carcasses
  • Be a friendly point of contact for trap hosts
  • Communicate with other Community Trapper volunteers via a group chat

This role combines hands-on trapping with meaningful community engagement. You’ll build relationships with trap hosts and help them feel connected to conservation and Aroha Kaikorai Valley’s mission. If you’re passionate about both people and the environment, this role offers a chance to make a real and lasting impact.

Training and skills gained:

  • Full training is provided
  • Gain practical predator control skills
  • Build confidence in community engagement
  • You’ll be working independently, but ongoing support will be available from Aroha Kaikorai Valley

Requirements

Ideally you are someone who:

  • Lives in or near Kaikorai Valley
  • Enjoys talking with a wide variety of people
  • Gets on well with older members of the community
  • Is comfortable visiting people’s properties to check backyard traps
  • Is comfortable managing possum and rat traps, including disposing of animal carcasses
  • Is physically fit and happy working outdoors

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • Approximately 2 hours per week. This can be adjusted to suit your needs and schedule.
  • A minimum commitment of 6 months is preferred
