Aroha Kaikorai Valley believe that together, the community can bring about massive change. Their mission is to eliminate weeds and pests, plant native plants to enhance the Kaikorai Valley environment while attracting birds and cleaning up the waterways.

They are looking for a community trapper to join their predator control efforts. In this role, you would be assisting with managing the backyard traps of people in our community. Tasks may vary, including:

  • disposing of the animal carcasses
  • resetting the trap
  • check traps for those who are physically unable to do so
  • regularly check baits
  • respond to trap catches that sometimes occur at awkward times

In addition to the trapping work, a lot of this role is connecting with people and building relationships with our hosts, who want to be part of something to feel connected to the environment and to support AKV's mission. If you have a passion for conservation as well as community, then this is a great opportunity to make an impact in both areas and contribute to long-term change.

Requirements

Ideally you are someone who:

  • Lives in Kaikorai Valley
  • Enjoys talking with a wide variety of people
  • Gets on well with older folk
  • Is comfortable with house visits to members of our community
  • Is comfortable managing possum and rat traps, which will involve re-baiting and resetting traps, disposing of animal carcasses.
  • Physically fit

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

2 – 3 hours per week. This can be adjusted to suit your needs and schedule.
