Aroha Kaikorai Valley believes that together, the community can bring about massive change. Their mission is to enhance the Kaikorai Valley environment while attracting birds and cleaning up the waterways.

They are looking for a community trapper to join their predator control efforts. In this role, you will be assisting with managing the backyard traps of people in the community. Tasks include:

  • checking traps in the back yards of private residences for people who are physically unable to do so
  • disposing animal carcasses
  • regularly changing baits and resetting predator traps

This role combines hands‑on trapping with meaningful community engagement. You’ll build relationships with trap hosts and help them feel connected to conservation and AKV’s mission. If you’re passionate about people and the environment, this position offers a chance to make a real and lasting impact.

Requirements

Ideally you are someone who:

  • Lives in Kaikorai Valley
  • Enjoys talking with a wide variety of people
  • Gets on well with older folk
  • Is comfortable with house visits to members of our community
  • Is comfortable managing possum and rat traps, which will involve re-baiting traps, resetting traps and disposing of animal carcasses.
  • Physically fit

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • 2 – 3 hours per week. This can be adjusted to suit your needs and schedule.
  • A minimum 6-month commitment is preferred
