Wilding Pine Control: Earnscleugh Tailings

The densification of the pines is at a critical point. We have a chance to save the area now before the exponential spread densifies too much to reverse it.
Your help is needed to control these pines. Join the team of Central Otago Wilding Conifer Group volunteers for a low intensity, social occasion where you can contribute and meet new people.

Recharge Cafe and Bar provide supper of pies, sweet treats and cold press juices! Drinking water also provided.

Purpose (what are we saving?):

  • Rare species like the endemic Alexandra Grasshopper, Tumbleweed lichen
  • Historically significance sites and artefacts.
  • Protecting future land use and ecological services (closed canopy pine cover will be very difficult to reverse).

The pines are slowly destroying the artifacts of the history and the habitat of these species. If it densifies to closed canopy cover, much of the history and species will be lost. Controlling the pines also allows future restoration of native or more appropriate species.

Central Otago Wilding Conifer Control Group and volunteers are tackling the manageable pines while DOC chainsaws bigger ones.
