Whakatipu Reforestation Trust works with the local community to grow and plant native trees and shrubs on public land around Queenstown. Since 2015, they have planted over 125,000 native trees in the Whakatipu Basin and after ten years of growth, many of these sites are becoming truly transformed. Their sites are thriving examples of successful ecological restoration, providing habitat and food for natives birds, insects and invertebrates.
The Trust welcome you to join them this Autumn to put in another 4000 plants into three of their special keystone sites:
Community planting days are a great chance to head out to a beautiful location, get your hands dirty and enjoy a morning in the fresh air. You will see first hand where plants from the nursery end up and help to restore our native biodiversity and mitigate climate change, one plant at a time. Planting days are a great way to take tangible action for our local environment, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
Absolutely everyone is welcome, these are family friendly events and no experience is required as our core volunteers will show you step by step how to plant a tree to ensure each plant has the best chance of survival. There are always a variety of easier and more challenging physical tasks available to suit everyone.
The majority of plants holes are pre-dug, so with the hard work complete, you can enjoy the most rewarding job of putting plants in the ground.
You will enjoy a delicious morning tea mid morning at each planting day and a complimentary BBQ lunch after planting at our first Autumn planting day at Whitechapel Reserve.
All planting days are drop-in style between 9am and 12 noon. Look for the green Whakatipu Reforestation Trust flags.
