Are you passionate about literacy and making a positive impact in your community? Look no further! Rural Youth and Adult Literacy Trust (RYALT) volunteer literacy coaches are the core of their organisation.
About RYALT students
- Students vary from people learning the alphabet to those wanting to write essays, but most are somewhere in between.
- They don’t have the skills they need for everyday life.
- They range in age from 14 to 65 and are from all walks of life.
RYALT ask for your preferences about the kind of person you would be comfortable working with. Your enthusiasm, patience, and commitment are what matter most.
What You'll Do As a Literacy Coach
- You will be teaching the basics of reading and writing.
- You will be working one to one with a student, by video-conference.
- Each coach will be coaching three times a week for a minimum of half an hour each time, as well as doing the planning for these meetings.
- Attend professional development workshops online.
Requirements
- Friendly, patient, love helping others.
- Moderate technology skills (you will be required to download and use the messaging app, Slack, for communication and their wiki library of resources). Tech support is available to help you learn to use these tools, if you are not confident.
- Excellent spoken English, reading and writing skills.
- Must be fluent in English (verbal and written).
- Reliable.
- An analytical mind, friendly personality.
- New Zealand based.
A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.
Time commitment
- A minimum of 3 hours per week, consisting of 1.5 hours preparation and 3 x half hour tutoring sessions online.
- Prior to that the training is self-access and free.
- You must also be able to attend one of our professional development webinars at least once a term, and to meet with the coordinator about the student’s goals once a term as well.
- This role requires a long-term commitment (a minimum of a year) and a fair bit of your time. However it can be flexible.
