Festival volunteers are the heart and soul of the Midwinter Carnival, helping bring this magical event to life across a range of exciting and essential roles. Whether you’re helping guide the lantern procession, serving mulled wine, keeping the Night Market vibrant, or ensuring crowd safety, there’s a spot for everyone to shine. Volunteers will be instrumental in making sure the two-day festival runs smoothly and safely.

📍 Location: First Church, Moray Place, Dunedin
📝 Volunteers who participate can gain valuable experience, receive a reference letter, and we are happy to sign off university volunteering hours.
🍴Volunteers will receive kai (food) during their shift

Roles include:

  • Brazier Keepers 🔥 (monitoring fire braziers safely)
  • Ticketing Team / Front of House 🎟️ (selling and checking tickets)
  • Procession Guides 🚶‍♀️ (helping guide lantern processions)
  • Info Stand Volunteers ℹ️ (providing information to the public)
  • Crowd Safety Team 🚧 (managing crowd flow at entrances)
  • Night Market Helpers / Waste Warriors ♻️ (keeping the Night Market tidy and vibrant)
  • Mulled Wine & Food Stall Volunteers 🍷 (serving food, drinks, and managing the Cup Library)
  • Set-up and Pack-down Crew 🛠️ (helping install and dismantle event infrastructure)

Requirements

✨ Ideal Crew Members Are:

  • Reliable, proactive, and friendly
  • Enjoy public-facing roles or behind-the-scenes action
  • Able to commit to both festival nights

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

Festival Dates:
🗓️ Friday 27 June & Saturday 28 June 2025 (weather backup: 4–5 July)

Shift Time:
🕔 5:00 PM – approx. 9:30 PM each night

⚠️ Volunteers must be available both nights.
