Join a passionate team working to protect and restore the unique biodiversity of South Otago. Forest & Bird South Otago is involved in hands-on conservation mahi across The Catlins. Whether you're into digging, trapping, planting, or promoting environmental action – there's something here for you. There is also the opportunity to help restore the Long Yellow Ribbon, a stretch of native plating near the Dutton's Bridge pull-off on the Owaka Highway, this happens monthly, times and activities below.
Volunteers play a vital role in restoring native habitats, caring for local flora, and protecting wildlife in the stunning Catlins region.

Nature lovers, students, families, retirees, groups or anyone keen to take action in their own backyard.
No experience required – just a willingness to get involved. Great for those who enjoy working outdoors and learning about conservation.
What to bring:
Sturdy footwear, outdoor clothing, curiosity about the natural world, and a sense of humour. All tools are provided (spade, flax knife, gloves recommended if available), along with plants and refreshments.
Perks:
Fresh air, wonderful native forests, native birdsong, new skills, the chance to make a meaningful impact, and free carrot cake.
Flexible – monthly working bees and ongoing opportunities available, volunteers are invited to stay for as little as half an hour or half a day.
