The Valley Project is a community-led development project in North East Valley, Dunedin that builds community connections and promotes the wellbeing of local families and whānau.

As a Crop Swap Volunteer you will work in a small team, supported by the Community Development Coordinator to set-up, co-lead and facilitate their monthly crop swap event at the Valley Project. Volunteers will play a role in raising awareness of the crop swap, and encourage a sense of curiosity, community and connection through the sharing of home-grown produce, preserves, baking and other kitchen wares.

  • Reduces food waste by facilitating the sharing of surplus home-grown items that might otherwise go to waste.

Requirements

  • Reliable and able to take initiative.
  • Approachable attitude with good interpersonal skills.
  • Community-minded and interested in learning more about growing and producing food at home.
  • Physically fit and able to move around chairs, tables and assist with clean-up.
  • Customer service and communication skills.
  • Team player who can work with others to solve problems and deal effectively with conflict.
  • Experience in public speaking would be advantageous.
  • Able to connect with a wide range of people from diverse communities and backgrounds.
  • Promotional and social media skills would be helpful, but not necessary.
  • Gardening and food production experience not required.

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • Need to be available on the last Sunday of the month from 2.30pm - 4.30pm to assist with the crop swap event.
  • Occasional participation in team meetings (online or in person) for an hour may be requested throughout the year.
  • Volunteers with marketing and social media skills would be welcome to assist with monthly content creation and promotion. This would be an additional 2-3 hours a month.
