The Otago Rural Support Trust is seeking a passionate and dedicated individual to join their Board of Trustees in a volunteer capacity. As a trustee, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the strategic direction and governance of the Trust to ensure that the Trust is best positioned to assist rural individuals and their families. The Trust is looking for someone who is passionate about strengthening rural communities and is excited to help them grow their impact.

The Otago Rural Support Trust is a charitable organisation set up to assist rural individuals and their families in a wide range of challenging situations including personal challenges, farm succession, financial issues and climatic adverse events. The Trust’s coordinators offer one on one support to rural individuals experiencing challenges and the Trust seeks to grow connection in rural communities through supporting local events which encourage wellbeing for farmers and growers.

As a volunteer trustee, you will work collaboratively with the board to provide oversight, governance, and strategic guidance for the organisation. Trustees play a vital role in ensuring the Trust remains financially sustainable, aligned to its purpose and values, achieves its long-term vision, and lives up to funders and community expectations.

Key aspects of the role include:

  • Preparing for and attending all Board meetings.
  • Proactively contributing to the discussions and decision-making.
  • Supporting the staff team to deliver on their roles and responsibilities.
  • Promoting the Trust.
  • Taking a rural welfare leadership role in Adverse Event response.

Requirements

An ideal Trustee would:

  • be from a rural background and well connected in their local community.
  • have previous board, or not for profit experience.
  • have excellent communication skills.
  • have one or more specialist skills or experience that would align with the objectives of the Trust and complement other Trustees skills (for example, finance, mental health, governance, fundraising).

Applications considered from all areas in Otago, however preference given to those from Clutha District and the Maniototo.

Time commitment

  • Attend bi-monthly board meetings, 1-2 hours (usually online).
  • Attend the AGM annually in person (1 day).
  • Preparation for meetings (1-2 hours).
  • Attend events to represent the Trust (as required).
  • Special project/subcommittee roles as required.
  • Represent the Trust in adverse event response (as required).

The anticipated commitment will be approximately 8hrs per month but this may vary.
